High Intensity Focused
Ultrasound or HIFU is the latest minimally invasive treatment for localized
prostate cancer. We encourage you to explore our website including viewing our
educational videos which can be accessed by clicking on the “Videos” tab at the
top of the page.
Each video provides
information in a way that uses visual and discussion techniques to explain this
elegant strategy for curing prostate cancer. If you have questions please don’t

for your case.
High Intensity
Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), for many patients, has revolutionized the treatment
of prostate cancer. Dr. Riemenschneider was involved with the research group
that led to the FDA approval. Since the October 13, 2015 FDA approval, we at
Riverside Urology, have used this treatment for many of our patients.
The beauty of HIFU is that it is a noninvasive “surgery”.
The recovery is almost unbelievably rapid. Patients have actually been out to a
restaurant the evening of their surgery. They are typically back to work in
7-10 days.
Patients who have undergone HIFU therapy will be attending
our March 9th Health Seminar. Several of these patients were treated
as many as five years ago. Their follow-up demonstrates excellent outcomes.
HIFU patients retain their ability to be sexually competent and they have very
little if any urinary symptoms. They are continent and “dry as a bone”.
HIFU follow-up includes patient visits at 2
weeks, then every three months and includes PSAs. A multiparametirc MRI is done at 6 month and then yearly for the next
three years.

Welcome to Riverside Urology HIFU
High intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, is a minimally invasive treatment option for localized prostate cancer that may offer a balance between eliminating cancer and maintaining quality of life. HIFU with Sonablate® 500 (Sonablate HIFU) is an out-patient, radiation-free procedure.
The HIFU procedure may be an option for men diagnosed with organ-confined prostate cancer. During the procedure, precisely focused ultrasound waves raise the temperature of the targeted prostate tissue to 195 degrees Fahrenheit in 2-3 seconds. This rapid-firing heat destroys the targeted tissue while leaving structures outside the targeted tissue unharmed.
We encourage you to explore our website to understand more about prostate cancer and the revolutionary procedure of HIFU.
